The Finland Arbitration Institute (FAI) is an independent and impartial institution operating under the auspices of the Finland Chamber of Commerce. It is responsible for the administration of arbitration and mediation proceedings for resolving domestic and international disputes. The FAI does not itself resolve disputes but administers proceedings in accordance with its arbitration and mediation rules.
Arbitration in Finland may also be conducted on an ad hoc basis, in which case the proceedings are not governed by the rules of the FAI. If the place of arbitration is in Finland, the Finnish Arbitration Act (967/1992) provides the statutory framework governing the ad hoc proceedings.
Finland has ratified the New York Convention of 1958.
Finland is widely recognized as a stable and arbitration-supportive jurisdiction. The Finnish Arbitration Act provides a clear statutory framework consistent with international standards, and Finnish courts reliably respect and enforce arbitral awards. Moreover, Finland’s political and economic stability, together with the widespread use of English in arbitral proceedings, makes Finland an excellent and predictable place for international arbitration.
