Describe the international arbitration governing bodies/structure in your jurisdiction.
JCAA (Japan Commercial Arbitration Association) is the only International arbitration institution located in Japan with a track record spanning 70 years. JIDRC (Japan International Dispute Resolution Center) was established in February 2018 as an agency to contribute to the further activation of international arbitration and international mediation in Japan. The main business of JIDRC is to provide affordable exclusive facilities in Tokyo and Osaka which are accessible and enabling hearings.
Describe any unique circumstances in your country that affect international arbitration (i.e., change in government, etc.).
The Japanese Government is currently working to establish Japan as an international dispute resolution center, much as Singapore and other countries have done in Asia and elsewhere. The Government is taking steps to improve Japan’s attractiveness as a neutral venue for the resolution of transnational disputes through arbitration, mediation, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
